The Shakespeare (Bed and Breakfast)
The Shakespeare 96 St. Leonards Gate,
Lancaster LA1 1NN
Tel: 01524 841041
The Shakespeare is the last survivor of a dozen Inns and Taverns that lined the ancient route of St Leonards Gate into the city of Lancaster. It serviced the shipyards and their associated maritime industries when Lancaster was a bustling sea port at the end of the 18th Century, together with the travellers and coaching services moving up and down the country for whom a stop at Lancaster was essential until the advent of railways made a night's stop less of a necessity.
'The Shakespeare Tavern' features in business registers and church records of the Georgian era, and the name reflects the early importance of the Grand Theatre, (now the third oldest working theatre in the country) which first opened across the road in 1782, and where Mrs Sarah Siddons performed in many of the Shakespearean tragedies (and where her ghost has lived on ever since).
Today The Shakespeare is a rather more sedate seven-roomed Bed and Breakfast, close to the heart of Lancaster's city centre, with the Grand and Dukes' theatres within two minutes walk and a dozen excellent eating places within five minutes on foot. For those visiting Lancaster University the main Bus Station is less than three minutes walk and the Railway Station within ten minutes of the city's pedestrianised centre. For over two centuries The Shakespeare has aimed to make every guest's stay as pleasant and as comfortable as possible, and the same tradition is carried forward today as strongly as ever.

Andrea from the Czech republic (June 2009): I would like to recommend The Shakespeare to anybody looking for comfortable and clean accommodation with the best care you can get. Sally and Fred are endlessly helpful, they provide fantastic and large breakfast including fresh fruit salad and arrange all they can to make your stay as benefitial as possible.
(ráda bych tento hotel doporučila i všem českým navštěvníkům, najdete zde příjemné, čisté prostředí a vynikající přístup majitelů)
Michal Lancaster (Nov 2007): A wonderful stay!!! Not only was the room VERY comfortable but the owners were the most wonderful hosts!! A+ on the breakfast and Tea upon arrival was wonderful! A great value within walking distance of just about everything! Highly recommend this B&B.

The Old Station House B&B
25 Meeting House Lane, Lancaster LA1 1TX
Tel: 01524 381060
Mike Waitling (December 2006) writes: have stayed in Lancaster a couple of times before & tried to check into the old station house, mainly because of the car park - car parking in Lancaster is a nightmare. But this is the first time I have managed to stay – it’s always been full. We stayed for 2 nights and we loved it! I was greeted by Andrea (whom I later discovered was the proprietor) she was really friendly and welcoming and told us where to go and not to go in Lancaster (always handy). The room was really comfy and cosy just what we needed after our long drive. Spotlessly clean with nice personal touches. Warm soft towels, plenty soaps, shampoo’s etc. Everything that you need for a perfect stay. The breakfast was massive, all you could imagine and plenty of it. Even porridge, fresh fruit, yoghurt etc. Brilliant! I was a little worried about the location. As the name implies it is the old stationmaster's house (obviously near the train station). But I only actually heard one train, which just shows you how bad the UK train system is I guess!! (maybe it was the 2 foot thick walls). I would definitely recommend it. I can see why it was always full when I tried to stay before. I think we fell lucky this time as we just called at the door and they had vacancies – next time I will book in advance!
