Satori (February 2014): I eat here frequently because it's just so nice and comfortable. The food is reasonable if nothing special (for vegetarians it is not worth going out of your way for), but the excellent service is second to none and the place is well-appointed without being pretentious.

Antony Hollinshead (June 2013): Just called in whilst awaiting a late train!
Bought a IPA, bag of chips and a "Porter" for my journey (I do mean beer not labourer). All very efficient and polite with chips served in short turn around service. Beer good and bottle choice very good.
Most importantly they had a Jazz improvised from a 6 individuals musicians and five dancers all having lots of fun and providing good and pleasant entertainment. Many thanks

Satori (June 2012): I started lunching here regularly with my mum a few years ago as the disabled access is good, though you have to come in off the back street and find parking on Common Garden St. The pub is large and has the particular advantage of being split into 2 areas with the lower (back) level being mainly a dining area and the upper (front) more pubbish (there's a disabled lift between levels). The view from the eating area is a dismal one of the backs of shops. It's very popular though, being affordable, muzak-free and well-behaved and you see a succession of families, couples and younger groups sorting out their club business, celebrating office birthdays, and just gratefully eating their way out of hangovers. It's a calm, composed atmosphere and big enough not to feel crowded. The menu is an extensive selection of standard pub fare (a thicket of giant menus crowds the table and blocks the view unless bulldozed away) but very, very, very cheap. Vegans and vegetarians have options. We regularly have the vegetarian Sunday lunch (about £7 - a portobello mushroom roast with all the trimmings. We order extra vegetarian gravy and an extra plate (no extra cost) - and it does the two of us nicely! The food comes hot, the Yorkshire pud is a technological feat, the roasties are crunchy and fluffy, the fresh cooked vegetables al dente and the staff are nimble, intelligent and polite. A drink is included.

The Music Room

Sun Square, Sun St, Lancaster LA1 1EW
Tel: 01524 65470
Probably built around 1735 by Oliver Marton Senior as a Summer house. The striking 3-storey  building has a charming little cafe on the ground floor with a little overlooking galley on the 1st. Tables stand outside in the tranquil, tree-shaded square just off the main city shopping centre.
The principal room of the building higher up on the first floor is not usually accessible by the public. So let me tell you that it has some of the finest Baroque plaster-work in the North West, attributed to Francesco Vassalli, with depictions of the Greek Muses - hence the name of the building. Access by arrangement with the Landmark Trust.
